Quite often after work I’d go for a walk around Albert Park Lake and always there are a multitude of birds on display. Sometimes I carry a camera, as I’ve thought of doing a ‘birds of Albert Park Lake’ series of posts one day. Alas, other stuff has got in the way.
Anyway, I’ve got hundreds of bird photos and like the swan picture, this ‘photo a day for the month’ has given me a chance to dust off some images, which normally sit, never to be seen on a hard drive.
Oh, one problem about doing posts about birds is correctly identifying who they are! I’m pretty sure these are Pacific black ducks. I think.
Cute duck pic – especially the little guy!
I like how you've focused very closely on the duckling and captured its softness in that light. And the parent duck is looking at you perhaps a little bit suspiciously…or maybe just anticipating food? When I think about it I've spent more hours walking in parks than on bushland hiking. At one point I'd try to walk around a nearby lake park every day to relax and keep the weight down. I'm so glad we've got these places to go to! Despite the years of duck viewing, I still get a kick out of watching them. Their life seems pretty simple. 🙂
Yep. Pacific Black ducks. Very common, but still nice to see, especially the chicks. I like Australian Wood Ducks with their soft grey & mottled feathers.
At the right time of year, there are so many ducklings around that lake! Always handy to have the camera there for that reason 🙂
No, the adult was looking at me, as I didn't really have a big zoom lens. Had to get a bit too close 🙂
I checked my Australian birds book quite a few times and was feeling confident with their name. I have been wrong before though, so it pays to leave a question mark at the end of the post!
Really beautiful photo, I love the detail in the duckling and the softness of the mother. I assume you take your camera to work with you.
Yeah, I've done so many laps around that lake and most times I have a camera with me. Usually it was my old Lumix in my pocket, but lately I wander around with the DSLR looking like a complete wanker! I have captured some nice sunsets there though, so I always think there'll be something worthwhile taking a snap of.
One word: Wow
I agree. Wow indeed!
